National Safe Work Month – October 2015

Safe Work Australia’s National Safe Work Month is happening again this October! 

Safe Work Month is a national event that focuses on the importance of safety in your workplace to reduce death, injury and disease.

This year’s theme is Be safe. Be healthy. Because… to encourage people to think about their reasons for staying safe on the job.

 

According to recent statistics:

  • In 2008-09, the total cost of work related injury and illness to employers, workers and the community was $60.6 billion
  • In 2014, 188 workers were killed at work
  • To date this year, there have been around 20 court prosecutions by NSW WorkCover with fines ranging from $75,000 to $250,000 for breaching various WHS laws.

To get you in the spirit of National Safe Work Month 2015, we have suggested a range of activities to help raise awareness and improve the level of staff safety engagement:

  • Update key elements of your WHS Plans and Safe Work Methods.
  • Hold Safety Update Training for all managers.
  • Host a “Lunch and Learn” for all staff to outline key elements of your WHS framework.
  • Conduct a Scenario based WHS Exercise for a high risk area.
